I had about six notes in momento.... a couple really long lists and such. Then I restarted my computer and lo, no notes at all. I looked in the My Documents file, but found nothing except the Momento.Notes file about 1kb in size. And there's nothing in the recycle bin either. Any Ideas???

Hmmm...I recently identified a bug whereby if you change a note (including opening/closing/moving it), and you shut down your PC before Memento has a chance to save it (it autosaves every minute), *AND* there was a problem saving the notes (it couldn't write the file, etc) then this can happen - your notes file gets corrupted (in my case, it actually got filled with zeros, but was the correct size).

I'm working on a fix and hope to release something soon. I'd recomend backing up the notes file regularly to avoid this until then. It doesn't happen often (I've seen it once* in 2 years of use on two machines, and had about 3 or 4 people report something similar happening) but it's better to be safe than sorry of course.

Sorry about that.

Tim

* This was following a reboot caused by installing a Windows critical update, so I have my suspicions...

I was cleaning through my notes, I have over 30 with information that I need and didn't back up (was cleaning the notes and was aout to back up). I told all the notes to "hide" and then was working with the computer over 20 minutes before having to do a restart. After restart I opened memento and all was lost. I had not installed or removed anything before this restart.

Is there a possibility of retrieving the information lost? I love this program and its veyr helpful to me as a student ( I often recommend it to students)

The only thing you can do is look in the 'Memento.notes' file in your My Documents folder - you can load it into Notepad or similar. I suspect the data is gone though.

I think this problem must be something to do with the strange way Windows shuts down programs when you restart...I'm planning on handling it in a different way, because enough people seemed to have found this problem to make it a bit of a concern really.

Although it's hit me before, I have also tested it on many occasions when shutting down Windows, and it's worked fine... :-(

How about backing it up every minute when you update. You could also have it check if the size of memento.name is 0 before writing a new backup. If it is zero and the backup is not, you could prompt the user to restore from the backup?

For reporting purposes: I had a similar problem. I didn't have to restart my computer or anything weird. I had a very large note (running XP) and a small note that I had hidden. Several hours later, after having worked on other projects, I shut down my computer the proper way and when I booted up the next day, my notes were gone. No hope for me in Memento.notes either.

This is all a bit perplexing, because Memento auto-saves any changes to disk about once a minute (assuming you're not in the middle of typing/editing a note)...so I'm a bit confused as to how it goes wrong...I assume my shutdown code was just a bit flaky.

Anyway, I'm shortly going to release a new version that behaves in a different way (and handles shutdown etc properly - or 'more properly' :-)). It now saves the notes to a different file first, and only if that works OK (according to Windows - I have to trust it on some level!) then it removes the old file and renames the new one. So basically if something catastrophic happens during the save process, you'll still have the previous version of your notes.

Which is nice.

I haven't tried out v1.12 yet, but I was prompted to upgrade by a similar bug in 1.09 that blew away my notes. I had a normal shutdown, but when I started my computer the next day, I immediately (after logging in; I'm using Windows XP) got an error message from Memento that said there was a problem opening the notes. I checked my Memento.notes file, and it was now empty: 0 bytes. Apart from that, I didn't get any information from the error dialog; I'm afraid I closed it before I realized how severe the problem was.

Anyhow, I hope this extra information can help you debug for the next version. Thanks for such a great and useful program!

Today, August 29 2005, I experience this problem. I had some 30 notes with Memento. All notes gone. Has this problem solved? Thanks.

I believe I have fixed this problem, yes - it should have been fixed in version 1.10 (see the version history). Of course, if you were using an older version (quite likely - there's no reason that you should be obsessively keeping up to date with Memento), then that would probably be why it went wrong :(

Were you running v1.10 or later? Or an earlier version?
